Executive Director Brian Rosborough recognized the achievements of a strong leader who has made a remarkable contribution to municipal government across Canada at today’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference. Susan Gardner, a driving force at Municipal World since joining the organization 32 years ago, was inducted into the AMO Honour Roll.
The Honour Roll recognizes those who have gone beyond their normal roles and responsibilities, and who have stepped up to represent municipal governments provincially and nationally. It recognizes those who have made a significant impact advancing better municipal government in the service to our communities.
Susan has overseen the transformation of Municipal World from its origins as Canada’s national journal of municipal government, into a multi-media enterprise that spans journalism and a broad range of print and digital publishing activities and services.
Rosborough remarked that “Susan has been a great friend to AMO and municipal associations across the country. Her career has had a broad and positive impact on communities in every part of Canada.”
Gardner’s work has influenced municipal elected officials, and public servants, in Canada and internationally and she has also championed Canadian publishing and women’s leadership.
Gardner, who was both honoured and humbled to receive the award, remarked that “AMO has been part of my life since I started at Municipal World over 30 years ago. As a young person with little knowledge about local government at the time, AMO conferences became ground zero for learning about this most critical order of government.”
Commenting on the similar values of both organizations, she added that “I always had an appreciation of how Municipal World’s mission of supporting open, autonomous, effective local government was so closely aligned with the work of AMO. I am beyond grateful for the friendship and support of AMO and it’s members.”
