With Municipal World CEO Susan Gardner celebrating 30 years of covering the municipal sector in 2019, it was a fitting time for Ontario’s local government leaders to recognize her efforts.
During the 2019 Ontario Municipal Administrators’ Association (OMAA) Fall Workshop, Gardner was presented with a special award – one that recognizes her “years of dedicated service to local government.”
OMAA President Michael Duben presented the award to Gardner – who joined Municipal World in 1989 – after running through a brief list of her career accomplishments. These included her roles as assistant editor, and later, associate editor. Today, Gardner is CEO for Municipal World – a role she accepted in 2017.
Over the course of her career, Gardner has worked on dozens of books published under the Municipal World banner and played a key role in the launching of the magazine’s website.
Duben also recognized Gardner for having obtained the Association of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers’ municipal law certificate in 1991 and completion of the Municipal Administration program in 1993, earning the AMTC(A) designation.
A graduate of King’s University College at Western University, Gardner also holds a Masters of Public Administration in Local Government from Western.
For her part, Gardner thanked the membership of OMAA for the honour, adding it was “really a surprise and a thrill” to be recognized by a group of people she holds in such high regard.
“I can’t tell you what an honor it is to receive this from this group,” she said. “I’ve followed a bit of a different path in my career. Not many people get what I do or why I do it, but this is a very special group to me, this group of people, this organization. Thank you so much.”
