Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief will join a leadership team comprised of five Deputy Fire Chiefs that oversee the Fire Rescue Services Branch of the Citizen Services Department.  The responsibilities of each Deputy Fire Chief will be assigned by the Fire Chief and may include but not be limited to the following: management and direction of Fire Prevention; Public Education and Fire Investigations; Fire Training, Recruitment and Logistics; Fire Suppression; Emergency Preparedness; Planning, Technical Services and Fire Dispatch; and Strategic Planning and Budget Management on behalf of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.
This role will oversee the management of the FRS Academy and Logistics Program areas including; recruitment and training of new firefighters, as well as maintaining certifications, occupational skills and ongoing career development of firefighters to keep front line staff current with the ability and knowledge of an ever-changing fire industry.  Logistics coordinates the management of Fire Rescues capital assets, facilities, apparatus fleet and inventory, personal protective and safety equipment, and supply needs. This role also includes oversight of the Physical & Mental Health/Wellness programs as well as Fire Rescue Services Occupational Health & Safety programs.

The Deputy Fire Chief, in conjunction with other Citizen Services Department senior managers, will be responsible for setting policy, establishing department strategies, business planning, leading the budget process and making key decisions affecting all areas of the Department.

  • Recognized post secondary education, experience and training or equivalent that pertain to management in the Fire Services
  • Demonstrated 15 years of firefighting, or related, experience in a major municipal fire department is required, including experience in a leadership capacity
  • Proven ability to effectively deal with complex business, political and staff issues; a functional understanding of business planning, budget preparation and budget management; experienced and successful networking and building strong relationships with customers and stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication/presentation skills, superior analytical skills, demonstrated people management skills and a high level of creative energy and enthusiasm
  • Recognized "out of the box" thinking, problem solving and decision making skills, and ability to work within tight parameters and time frames
  • You are a focused individual who sets high standards, both personal and professional, who can effectively lead change and has demonstrated abilities in providing strong, innovative leadership within a team-oriented, unionized, collaborative environment

Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday.
Salary Range:  ML4, $130,111 - $162,640 (Annually)
