An energetic, caring community that embraces creativity and innovation, Halifax is the business, financial, educational, social, and cultural centre for the Atlantic region. It is a place that offers the unique balance of great quality of life, accessibility, natural beauty and a small-town feel with all the amenities, culture and opportunities of a modern urban centre. The Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) takes pride in making Halifax the best it can be, and with development in the HRM booming, they are focused on opportunities that will best mold and shape the region. On behalf of the HRM, we are seeking to hire an experienced senior leader to head Regional Planning to guide this team in shaping the Halifax of tomorrow.
Reporting to the Director, you will be responsible for overseeing Regional Planning, Environment & Energy, Social & Economic Research, and Urban Design & Heritage. You will lead the development and implementation of best practices within each of these program areas to achieve the broader organizational goals. Providing vision and strategic leadership, you will be accountable for the formulation of long range objectives, policies and recommendations related to future land use, including the preparation, review and evaluation of municipal planning strategies, land use by-laws and regulations. You will direct and recommend action consistent with the Regional Plan and Council’s goals, and play a strategic role in determining the long-term health of the Municipality and implications of planning and development decisions. As a leader, you will also create a positive work environment in which each member of the team can actively contribute to success.
As the ideal candidate your Bachelors or Masters degree is coupled with your experience working in a growing municipality. You have lead organizational change from concept through to successful implementation in a complex political environment, and navigated a variety of challenges and demonstrated ability to successfully steer projects through the political decision making process. You have proven your ability to lead, coach, facilitate and motivate a team and bring people together to obtain consensus on complex issues. You are a strong communicator, able to obtain buy-in and engagement from different audiences by adjusting your language and approach. It is these communication skills that also assist you in creating and maintaining strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
By joining the Halifax Regional Municipality, you will be part of an organization that is making a difference in the lives of community members. You will be given the opportunity to make an impact on the region’s future, and help shape the policies that will guide Halifax’s development. In exchange for the experience and hard work you bring, you will be rewarded with a comprehensive compensation and benefits package.
