Side Loader Operator/Labourer

Position Summary

Reporting to the Superintendent of Solid Waste , and under the direction of the Working Foreman (Solid Waste) , for eight (8) months (approximately April to November ) the Side Loader Operator is responsible for:

  • collecting waste materials for both the dual -stream and single- stream collection on assigned routes, ensuring completion of assigned routes and assisting with the completion of other routes as required;
  • following applicable Departmental Directives and Waste Management By -Laws;
  • ensuring the vehicle is regularly serviced and maintained;
  • emptying road side litter containers and picking up road side debris;
  • performing special collection services of large items;
  • utilizing a variety of tools and equipment;
  • providing excellent customer service, including responding to inquiries/concerns from the general public and other members of staff in a courteous manner, as necessary; and,
  • other duties as may be assigned.

Reporting to the Superintendent of Operations (Roads) and are under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Operations (Roads/Traffic), for four (4) months (approximately November to April ) the Labourer is responsible for providing general labour for the duties involved in the Roads, Environmental, and Traffic Sections within the Public Works Department, including:

  • operating and maintaining various equipment, vehicles and tools;
  • flagging and traffic control;
  • repairing Town fences;
  • concrete repairs and installation;
  • assisting with roadway patrolling, maintenance, repairs and clean up;
  • tree trimming and removal;
  • snow clearing and application of salt on the road and sidewalk areas;
  • installation of traffic signs and detours;
  • providing excellent customer service, including responding to inquiries/concerns from the general public and other members of staff in a courteous manner, as necessary; and,
  • other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

As the successful applicant you will possess

  • a secondary school graduation diploma;
  • a minimum of one (1) year directly related experience in roads and roadway maintenance;
  • a minimum of one (1) year experience operating large trucks (over 11,000 kg., G.V.W.);
  • a valid Class "DZ" Driver’s Licence maintained in good standing with a good driving record;
  • physically fit and capable of performing strenuous physical labour with heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. in varying weather conditions;
  • the ability to operate various tools and equipment;
  • strong reasoning, numerical and analytical skills to ensure work is completed effectively;
  • the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form;
  • the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff; and,
  • well- developed interpersonal and public relations skills to effectively respond to resident concerns.

Hours of Work
April – November (approximately) : Monday to Friday - 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m
November – April (approximately) : Monday to Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Intended Work Location -Town of Whitby

Salary: $26.53 - $33.16 per hour (Side Loader Op); $21.77 - $27.17 per hour (Labourer)
