The City of Parksville is seeking a qualified individual to join our Community Planning and Building Department in the permanent full-time position of Chief Building Inspector. Reporting to the Manager of Planning and Development Services, or designate, the Chief Building Inspector is responsible for the administration, interpretation and enforcement of the BC Building Code and municipal regulations and bylaws. This is technical work of an inspectional and regulatory nature, involving the inspection of building operations of all types and occupancies to ensure that construction, conversion, repairs, alterations, demolitions and additions to buildings comply with applicable requirements.
We are seeking an individual who thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of building construction, plumbing, appropriate heating and electrical installations and a solid working knowledge of applicable Codes, bylaws and procedures; as well as thorough knowledge of current B.C. Building, Plumbing and Fire Codes, N.F.P.A. Standards, relevant Federal, Provincial and municipal statutes, regulations and bylaws. This role will provide the greatest satisfaction to a detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, involving a high level of public interaction and understands the complexities of local government. The ideal candidate will have an outstanding attitude and interpersonal skills, be highly organized and technologically savvy, able to work in an environment with changing priorities and constant interruptions, respond to new challenges and a high volume of work while prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines and handling multiple concurrent tasks.
The ideal candidate will have successfully completed Grade 12, plus considerable experience as a journeyman in an applicable building trade, preferably in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduation from an institute of technology with a Diploma in a building technology course or civil technology course; or certification in one or more of the building trades, preferably in the HVAC field, supplemented by completion of Building Code courses and sound related experience. A minimum of ten years of municipal building inspection experience is required. Possession of Building Officials Association of BC Level III Certification and Plumbing Inspectors Association of B.C. Level I Certification and possession of a valid BC Drivers Licence and good driving record is a requirement.
This is a unionized position. The wage rate is $41.93 per hour – after successful completion of probation
(July 1, 2017 rate) based on a 35 hour work week in accordance with the current Collective Agreement.
