Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager of Water and Wastewater Services, the Water & Wastewater Technologist plays a key role in the monitoring, analysis, and maintenance of water and wastewater infrastructure systems with a focus on reducing water leaks and managing inflow and infiltration (I&I). This position is responsible for identifying, diagnosing, and resolving issues related to water leaks, wastewater system infiltration, and inflow, ensuring the efficient operation of water distribution and wastewater collection systems while promoting sustainable water management practices.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular inspections and assessments of the water distribution system to detect and evaluate water leaks
- Utilize advanced technologies such as acoustic leak detection, pressure loggers and smart meters to identify leaks.
- Monitor and assess the wastewater collection systems to identify sources of inflow and infiltration.
- Conduct detailed I&I analysis using flow meters, CCTV inspections and smoke testing to pinpoint areas of concern.
- Organize and provide technical comments on engineering submissions and study reports as required.
- Prepare reports on system performance, leakage levels and I&I occurrences for Management and Council review.
- Develop Request for Proposals (RFPs) to hire consultants to undertake engineering assignments to provide engineering services for the water and wastewater services.
- Work closely with operating teams to develop and implement leak repairs and I&I reduction strategies, including repairing damaged pipes, improving system integrity, and addressing cross connections
- Maintain thorough working knowledge of best practices and innovative project delivery techniques, Town’s Engineering Standards, Ontario Provincial Standards and Specifications and Canadian Construction Document Committee contracts including terms and conditions and applicable legislation, etc
- Prepare tenders for the repairs of watermains and sanitary collection mains.
- Coordinate with contractors, operations staff and consultants to implement repairs and corrective actions, ensuring adherence to project timelines and budgets.
- Engage with the public and local communities to raise awareness about water conservation and the importance of minimizing leaks and I&I.
- Participate in continuing education and certification programs to stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and best practices in water and wastewater management.
- Provide back-up to both the Locator Technician and the Backflow Water Meter Technician.
- Promotes a high standard of customer service to the public as well as to all internal customers.
- Personally comply with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work, standard operating guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
What you will need:
- Requires 3-year post-secondary diploma in Environmental Studies or Civil Engineering or a related field
- Sound knowledge of water treatment and distribution and wastewater treatment and collection
- Minimum of 5 years of practical and progressive design and construction inspection experience related to municipal infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare technical reports on all aspects of water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Well developed decision-making, problem-solving, organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills.
- Strong computer skills and knowledge including MS Office Suite.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, with changing priorities, deadlines and readily adapt to change.
