  • Hours per Week: 40 hours per week. On call and work outside of normal business hours are a requirement of this position.

What you’ll do:
The General Manager, Operations & Fleet plans, organizes, directs and integrates the County’s Public Works Operations Division of the Planning, Development & Public Works Department. The General Manager plans, co-ordinates, delivers and monitors work activities while ensuring related business, administrative, supervisory and safety objectives are achieved and provides strong leadership in the development of short and long-term operational/capital requirements, annual budgets, asset management and contractor management.

The position develops and maintains effective working relationships at all levels of government, with external agencies/partners, internal departments and the public, and is responsible for setting and accomplishing departmental objectives and goals within the guidelines and resources established by County Council and the Chief Administrative Officer.

  • Division Oversight: Works collaboratively with the Operations Supervisors to ensure the maintenance, operations work plans and activities within the County road network are completed. Provides leadership and support to the managers of the Facilities and Waste Management streams on related projects and initiatives.
  • Financial Planning & Analysis: Develops, implements and monitors the annual and long-term budget for the division. Works with individual streams to review and approve operating budgets.
  • Employee Relations: Acts as a point of contact to front-line staff to answer questions and provide support, including clarifying operational directions, providing strategic updates, etc. Works collaboratively with People Services representative during staff recruitment, labour management meetings and disputes, health & safety, and employee coaching.

This job is for you if…

  • Our non-negotiables: You have a 3 year diploma in Civil Engineering or related field, and on-the-job experience in a roads maintenance capacity. You have obtained the Certified Road Supervisor – Senior designation from the Association of Ontario Roads Supervisors (AORS) and have a valid Ontario Class G license and a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Experience: You have a minimum of 7 years progressive experience, preferably in a Municipal Public Works environment. Our ideal candidate would have gained experience working in an Operations / Road Maintenance capacity, and has a working knowledge/understanding of Facilities Maintenance and Waste Management activities. You have experience supervising in a unionized environment and take pride in fostering collaboration, customer service delivery and continual improvement.
  • Communication: You are a strong communicator and understand the importance of building and maintaining relationships. You are comfortable talking to people of all levels in an organization, and are comfortable shifting your delivery style to accommodate different groups. You have a demonstrated ability to think on your feet and make urgent decisions, as well as know when a situation requires a step back and further thought before moving forward.
