Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, the Fire Training Officer is responsible for the development, delivery, and evaluation of training programs for the fire department as well as public fire safety education program. Attendance at all emergency responses is required to perform the fire suppression duties.

In this role you will be focused on:

  • Developing and coordinating training programs, manuals, lesson plans, guide sheets and an annual training syllabus for full time and volunteer department staff to enable them to meet and maintain performance levels established by the department
  • Coordinating the delivery of fire service-related training programs such as recruit training, officer development, emergency patient care, vehicle driver/operator training, ice/water rescue and fire suppression so that continuity of training is maintained, and fire service training goals and objectives are attained.
  • Researching and evaluating policies, procedures, techniques, and equipment and advise of any necessary changes to ensure procedures are effective and safe to maintain or improve performance levels.

What you will do:

  • Chair the Monthly Training Committee Meetings
  • Meet regularly with Officer to assist in developing and maintaining a progressive and efficient training program. Monitor and evaluate ongoing training programs to ensure they are current, meet legislated and department requirements and address department training objectives
  • Respond to all emergencies during regular work hours assisting where necessary to perform fire suppression duties

What you will bring:

  • 2 year degree or diploma in Fire Services or equivalent in education and work experience
  • NFPA 1001 Level 2 Firefighter; NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level 2 (or Level 1 with the ability to obtain Level 2 within one year); NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor; NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer; NFPA 1002 Fire Service Pump Operations
  • Minimum 5 years as a certified firefighter or equivalent
  • Experience in development and presentation of fire or emergency services training
