Michael Payne

Chief Administrative Officer
Michael Payne, CAO, Town of Berwick
  • Organization: Town of Berwick
  • Posted: March 13th, 2019

The Town of Berwick, Nova Scotia, has announced the appointment of Michael Payne to the position of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).

Payne is no stranger to public service, although his previous experience was in a much different capacity, serving as a former Kings District RCMP inspector. In fact, Payne’s background includes 30 years with the RCMP in addition to his more than 12 years as a Commissioned Officer.

Although Payne replaced former CAO Don Regan at the end of November, he began working with his predecessor back in July. That transition process, and the opportunity to work with Regan – who had been with the town for nearly four decades – is something Payne credits with making the transition into his new role both enjoyable and rewarding.

Payne’s connection to the Berwick community began almost 20 years ago when he became the first detachment commander for the town after it switched to RCMP service.

After leaving the Berwick detachment in 2002, Payne worked in Newfoundland and Labrador and in the Canadian north before returning with his family in 2010 to become the officer in charge of the Kings District RCMP. Payne retired from the RCMP in the fall of 2017.

In addition to his role as CAO, Payne is also an entrepreneur in pet specialty retail, working with his wife Jane at Global Pet Foods.

“I focus on my wellness, nurture my family and practice authentic leadership,” Payne states on his LinkedIn page. “I work to build trust, engagement and support within all my relationships that contribute to personal and organizational goals.”
