Remembering World War I, urban space, and the importance of today's decisions

I’m going to connect some ideas that may not seem related at first glance: the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I; the shape (both physical and spiritual) of Canadian communities; and current attitudes and the decisions we make today as municipal officials and those involved in planning.

My part in this story began about four decades ago. I grew up on a military base, the son of a soldier. Perhaps as part
