In 1948, Claude Elwood Shannon and Warren Weaver published a mathematical tome entitled The Mathematical Theory of Communication. In layman’s terms, the Shannon-Weaver communications model is a detailed analysis of what happens at each step of the communications process (and is also instrumental in making us more aware of each step). Originally developed to help us better understand how electronic systems exchange data, it has also been applied, with some success, to how people communicate.
