The 1980s were difficult for Brantford, Ontario. The city’s blue collar prosperity collapsed when high debt charges undermined the market for the manufacturing that was the foundation of its economy. Locals joked about the rising of Brantford’s own “red sea,” which consisted of wave after wave of Massey-Ferguson combines that accumulated in parking lots, waiting for customers that never materialized.
