The past year has been challenging economically, to say the least. There have been massive dislocations, especially in tourism, with extended lockdowns and major restrictions. Government assistance provided a partial and temporary solution, but it has not been easy.

The year of the pandemic has also seen substantial “rural and small-town” migration, with most of that to “shadow” cities within 100 kilometres of major centres. Some folks adapted quickly to working at home. Outside of
