Principle of fairness in valuing Federal properties

A decision just released by the Supreme Court of Canada should give Canadian municipalities a surer footing when dealing with the federal government as a landowner in their communities. The recent case of Halifax (Regional Municipality) v. Canada (Public Works and Government Services) (2012 SCC 29) revolves around the federal government’s payment of funds to municipalities under the Payments in Lieu of Taxes Act, R.S.C. 1985 (PILT).

As noted on the federal government’s PILT website,

ALL MUNICIPAL. ALL ACCESS.
