As any school child will tell you, the rain that falls from the sky – watering our gardens, forming puddles, and dripping off umbrellas as people scurry down the sidewalk – is part of a much larger cycle. In the natural environment, rainwater absorbs into plants and soil, and then moves back into the atmosphere, or into groundwater, streams, or wetlands, eventually evaporating into the atmosphere, only to begin the cycle all over again.
