New wastewater effluent regulations

The federal government is moving ahead with new Wastewater Systems Effluent Regulations under the Fisheries Act.1 What will it mean for municipalities?

After half a century of regulation, municipal wastewater effluent remains one of Canada’s largest sources of water pollution. About six trillion litres of wastewater effluent is discharged to Canadian waters each year, from more than 3,700 wastewater systems; more than 150 billion litres are completely untreated.2
