Across the country, abuse is taking its toll on municipal politicians. The past year alone has seen a wave of resignations. Amanda McDougall-Merrill, the first woman elected mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, announced in May that she will not run for re-election. One of her reasons? “Relentless and vile” social media abuse. In April, Pierre Leroux resigned as the mayor of Russell, Ont., citing a toxic political climate.
