Childhood memories often include those “lazy, hazy days of summer,” when popsicles were plentiful and demands were few. For me, those memories include exploring the sprawling lawn of my grandfather’s rural Nova Scotia property during our feather hunts. Little did I know that these experiences were shaping my understanding of the healing power of nature, a sentiment deeply embedded in my grandfather’s post-war pursuits of painting, traditional Mi’kmaq basket weaving, and nature-inspired poetry.
