Growing healthy rural communities

Rural communities cover approximately 90 to 95 percent of Canada’s land mass and, depending on the definition applied, can include between six to 11 million residents.1 The provinces with the highest proportions of rural and remote residents are: P.E.I. (53 percent), New Brunswick (48 percent), N.W.T. and Nunavut (46 percent), Nova Scotia (43 percent), Yukon (39 percent), and Saskatchewan (33 percent).
