Job Profile

We are looking for a competent and passionate Transportation Planning Specialist with the Community Development Department, Transportation Division available immediately.  

What you will be doing

  • Supports the timely review and approval of development applications in coordination with Development Engineering, Planning and other related department staff on transportation-related matters.
  • Periodically reviews and updates plans and strategies including the Transportation Master Plan and Cycling Master Plan to ensure relevant policies, infrastructure planning, and alignment with industry regulatory requirements, standards, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Provide leadership in the development of multi-modal transportation and mobility policies, guidelines, and standards including development of an annual TDM (transportation demand management) strategy and work plan
  • Undertake and/or review area specific technical transportation network studies, feasibility studies or other transportation-related studies.
  • Works collaboratively with the Region of Waterloo and Grand River Transit and identifies, plans, and implements transit and transportation demand management (TDM) initiatives with the objective of facilitating increased use of transit, and encourage Transit Oriented Development (TOD).
  • Provides professional and technical advice and input to increase transit ridership, use of active transportation and TDM measures, including addressing challenges in accommodating active transportation such as walking and cycling and transit within road rights-of-way and roadway operations.
  • Advocates the benefits of sustainable and active transportation in the community and pursues participation in programs and initiatives.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with local, regional, provincial, federal agencies, employers and private organizations related to TDM and TOD initiatives; liaises with various committees such as the Cambridge Cycling Focus Group and School Travel Planning Steering Committee.
  • Ability to work effectively with developers, consultants, contractors, colleagues, elected officials, and other internal and external clients and stakeholders.
  • Preparation of staff reports and recommendations to City Council on matters dealing with transportation and mobility planning.
  • Prepares grant applications, monitors budgets and identifies funding opportunities.
  • Represents the City at technical committees and provide input to strategic transportation studies and initiatives undertaken by external agencies including adjacent municipalities, regional and provincial government agencies

Education

College diploma in Transportation Engineering, Planning, Environmental Studies, Civil Engineering, or closely related field.
Registration (or eligibility) with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) with designation of Certified Engineering Technologist (CET); and/or Registered Professional Planner designation.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Three to four years of previously related experience in transportation and TDM concepts.
  • Good knowledge of the Ontario Planning Act and applications submitted under the Act including Official Plan Amendments, Secondary Plans, Zoning By-Law Amendments, Plans of Subdivision, Site Plan Control, etc.
  • Familiarity with transportation demand forecasting and understanding of transportation-related software packages.
  • Highly developed personal, interpersonal, presentation and teamwork skills, with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, at all organizational levels.
  • Knowledge of the theories, concepts, principles, practices, and techniques in the field of TDM.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, Adobe Pro, OnPoint, CMIC, Maximo, Google Maps, Internet.
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle for business purposes.

Valid G driver’s license.

Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer) 

Your compensation

This position is within Grade 11 of the inside workers union Salary Schedule and has an annual salary range of $87,233 – $92,711. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer. 

Location of position

This position is located at Cambridge City Hall.

Hours of work

The current regular hours of work are in accordance with the collective agreement, however currently are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm. (35 hours per week), Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings as required.
