This article is the first of three in a series that explores the opportunities for on-farm diversified uses (OFDUs) through public planning policy while balancing agricultural land preservation in Ontario. In exploring the premise of OFDUs, this article identifies the challenges Ontario family farms are facing and examines the provincial planning policy system that permits OFDUs as a policy avenue to balance farmland preservation and economic opportunity for farmers.
