Rob Buchan

The City of Prince Rupert, BC, announced on October 15, 2021, that after an extensive search Dr Rob Buchan has been appointed City Manager.

Buchan brings more than 30 years of experience to the role, including 11 years as CAO for the City of Langford and 10 years as CAO for the District of Saanich. He is also an adjunct professor at the Department of Resource & Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University.

“I am very excited to be the new City Manager for the City of Prince Rupert,” said Buchan. “It is an honour and great responsibility to continue this work with the community, a very talented staff team, and the Mayor and Council to bring the City forward.”

Transformative Incrementalism: A journey to sustainability

In 2009, Buchan was inducted into the Canadian Institute of Planners College of Fellows in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Planning in Canada. In 2018 he was awarded the Distinguished Member award by the Local Government Management Association of British Columbia.

“City Council is pleased to welcome Dr Rob Buchan as Prince Rupert’s next City Manager,” said Mayor Lee Brain. “[With] a proven track record developing affordable housing and community revitalization, Dr Buchan was the prime candidate to take Prince Rupert to the next level under our Rupert 2030 vision.”
