Charlottetown, the Capital of Prince Edward Island, counted 36,094 residents in the 2016 census. The city grew up around a well-planned downtown core which still contains many Victorian-era houses and buildings as attractions. Charlottetown Transit offers 10 bus routes around town. Charlottetown’s economy is dominated by the public sector. The provincial, federal, and municipal levels of government are significant employers in the central part of Queens County, as are the health care and secondary and post-secondary education sectors. Technology companies have increased their share of the city’s workforce recently by adding tech support call centers downtown. Other significant economic activities include light manufacturing, such as chemicals, bio-technology, and machining. The city’s municipal government is structured around a town council comprising a mayor and ten councillors elected using the ward system. Charlottetown has seven seats (out of 27) in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The city maintains numerous parks and playing fields for soccer, baseball, softball, football, rugby, and field hockey. A recent waterfront redevelopment project has produced many more and improved walking trails and parks on former industrial lands.
