The City of Ottawa counted 964,743 residents in the 2016 census. Ottawa is the Capital of Canada. The city has the highest standard of living in the nation and very low unemployment. The local economy has two major sectors – high technology and the federal government. Both sectors offer high-paying jobs for knowledge workers in a relatively stable environment and account for 37% of Ottawa’s total gross domestic product. The City of Ottawa is a single-tier municipality, meaning it’s a census division all by itself and has no county or regional municipality above this hierarchical designation. As a single-tier municipality, the city is responsible for all municipal services including fire, emergency medical services, police, parks, roads, sidewalks, public transit, drinking water, storm water, sanitary sewage and solid waste. Ottawa is governed by the 24-member Ottawa City Council consisting of 23 councillors each representing one ward and the mayor is elected in a citywide vote. Ottawa has the most educated population among all major Canadian cities and is home to a large number of internationally significant post-secondary, research, and cultural institutions, including the National Arts Centre, the National Gallery, and numerous national museums.
