Red Deer, Alberta is located halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. The city had 100,415 residents (2016 census) and a medium annual growth rate of 2.23 percent. The city is served by Red Deer Regional Airport and maintains a bus service along major transit routes. The local government administers world class recreational facilities including Collicutt Centre, G.H. Dawe Centre, Recreation Centre, Michener Centre and Arenas. There is a regional hospital in town. In 2003, Red Deer was named the Cultural Capital of Canada by Canadian Heritage because the city is home to such a wide variety of arts and cultural groups centered around the Central Alberta Theatre, Ignition Theatre, Central Music Festival, the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery as well as the Red Deer Royals and other performing arts and fine arts organizations. There are approximately five thousand businesses operating in many different sectors in the city and more in Red Deer County which makes the region’s economy more stable regardless of energy prices.
