In addition to my work with local governments, I consult extensively with non-profit boards and crown corporations. In that role, I am frequently asked for my opinion on the make-up of an effective board. The answer depends on the type of board, its mandate/role, and the priorities it has established. That is, is the board an expert body, a layperson body, or one that reflects various constituencies (i.e. vested interest groups)?
