There has recently been a shift in how municipal wastewater is being viewed and managed in Canada. Wastewater and treated municipal effluent are increasingly viewed as resources; however, uncertainty about possible health issues and the applicability of new technologies figure prominently in decision making regarding their use. Wastewater has the potential to generate heat and energy, or act as an alternative source of water or valued chemicals, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon.
